Roy Coffman has enthralled audiences in twenty-seven states with his voice and wit—and he isn't even the entertainment.

Roy CoffmanFrom the Northeast to the Southwest and throughout the Midwest, Roy's powerful voice has boomed with the roar of motorcycles, hot rods, and monster trucks. His skills as an announcer are more than just a deep, smooth voice. It goes beyond his 30 years of radio and public speaking experience. Part of it is that Roy studies what it is he's talking about. He sounds knowledgeable because he is. He has learned the sports and become a fan. He also keeps abreast of what is going on in the industries—from tractor pulls to stage shows.

Another factor of his success is the rapport he develops with the performers, from extreme athletes to Hollywood stunt men. He's out there in the dirt with the mud draggers so he can inform his audience.

Yes, it is Roy's audience. He puts in a lot to make sure the audience has a good time. He takes his congenial, southern sound and his charm into the stands before, and often during, the event. He meets the newlyweds in row three and makes them blush; he finds the couple with 30 years of experience and has them cackling over the joys of married life; and before you can say “start your engines,” strangers become friends. So when Roy's announcing, he's talking to 10 year-old Johnny and his three friends, and to Mrs. Wilcox who, thanks to Roy, is aware of the possibility of mud splattering her white outfit. (And if Tide is a sponsor, you can bet Roy told her to use it to get the mud out!)

Many announcers avoid one-on-one contact with the crowd, partly because of its unpredictability. But that's part of what Roy enjoys about it. The more people in the stands the better he likes it; he feeds on their energy, then pumps all that excitement back to them. Roy's audiences are more inclined to get involved, stand up and cheer and shout….or boo in the spirit of fun. With Roy behind the mike, spectators don't become bored. Delays don't make them impatient or ruin their good humor. As far as any audience is concerned, Roy is part of the program.

In addition to his professionalism, it is his ability to rev up an audience that has gotten him repeat performances. The Hillsboro Missouri Community Civic Club is among several local and regional organizations that call him year after year.

When Roy gets the call he's ready to go, no matter what the event or where it is. This isn't part-time work for him or a hobby; it's his career and he loves it.
